This chapter introduces the topic of discovering Web services and, in particular, the role of a services registry in a service-oriented architecture. We discuss several alternatives to service registries, and in particular focus on the Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) standard. After explaining the core APIs in UDDI Version 1.0 and highlighting the important APIs in UDDI Version 2.0, we discuss the role of UDDI as a private services registry, including the convention of storing WSDL service descriptions in a UDDI registry.

We also introduce some business partners of SkatesTown and discuss how a service registry such as UDDI can be used to help integrate their Web services. In the last section, we'll introduce sample Java code that gives an example of how these partners can be pulled together in a sample supply chain.
