This book is dedicated to the many developers, system administrators, and others who have spent countless hours addressing Linux performance analysis and tuning issues on a regular basis.

The book has been a work in progress for several months, and I am indebted to many people for helping to make it happen. It started with a visionary idea of writing a book on Linux performance in fall 2002 with Bill Hartner, Duc Vianney, Peter Wong, and I brainstorming various "what-if" scenarios regarding various Linux performance publications. This idea quickly turned into a reality a couple of weeks later when Bill was contacted by Mark Taub at Prentice Hall with the suggestion of writing a book on Linux performance. Special thanks to Bill, Duc, and Peter for their brainstorming suggestions during that initial meeting. Thanks also to Mark Taub for the initial contact, which transformed our ideas into a working reality.

It has been an eventful journey in getting authors, additional authors, and editors working on this effort. I am indebted to all of the chapter authors for their dedication and perseverance in working on this project. Special thanks to the associate editors, Gerrit Huizenga and Badari Pulavarty, for their tireless efforts in working on this project through its many changes. I am forever indebted to Christine Lorenz, our technical writer, for going above and beyond the call of duty in working on the edits, interacting regularly with the authors, editors, and publisher, and practicing overall project management for this work. Through all of the challenges of working with many different individuals, Chris has exhibited the epitome of fortitude. Finally, many thanks to my mentor, Joan Mitchell, for sharing with me her words of wisdom and experience as I labored through this process.
