Footnote or endnote reference marks appear as 1,2,3 by default. Word provides you with various options in order to customize the reference marks the way you wish. If you'd like to change your footnotes or endnotes to be a,b,c or Roman numerals i, ii, iii, you can do that through the Insert menu. You can format the location of the footnote or endnote to be at the bottom of the text, or at the bottom of the page. You can also have Word renumber your footnotes or endnotes after each section of your document.

Did You Know?

You can modify a Reference mark . To move, copy, or delete a note, you work with the note reference mark in the document window, not the text in the Notes pane. You move, copy, or delete a note in the same way you would text in a document.

You can quickly view your footnotes or endnotes . Although footnotes and endnotes do not appear in Normal and Outline views, you can double-click a reference mark to open the Notes. You can also view footnotes and endnotes by pointing to a reference mark to display the footnote or endnote in a ScreenTip.
