Appendix B. Country Codes and International Access Numbers To make a phone call to another country, you'll need to dial some additional numbers before you can dial the local number that you want to reach. The first number is the international access number for the country that you're placing the call from. This number is essential because otherwise, your call will not be recognized as an overseas phone number. Many countries that share a geographic region use the same international access numbersome of the most common are 00 and 011. The second number that you need to dial is the country code of the destination for your call. Most countries have their own unique number, with a few exceptionsfor example, the United States and Canada both share a country code of "1." Once you've dialed these numbers, you can now key in the number of the person or business that you want to reach. In some countries, there might be additional area codes or city codes for regions within that country. Most likely, you already have these included in the number you're going to dial. And finally, some locales might list their phone number with an extra digit in front of it (such as a "0" in some European countries) that's meant for local dialing, but that extra digit might get dropped when phoning from outside the country. For example, if you're in the United States and dialing a number in Amsterdam, you would first dial "011" for international access, then "31" for the Netherlands, and then the local number in Amsterdam, which would most likely begin with the Amsterdam regional code of "20." A good Web site to use as a reference for dialing information anywhere in the world is www.countrycallingcodes.com. | When you see a "~" in the international access code, this means that you must wait for a second tone at this stage before continuing to dial. |
