Chapter 8: Designing a Strategy to Manage Replication

Microsoft Exam Objectives Covered in this Chapter:

  • image from book Design a strategy to manage data across linked servers.

    • Set up and manage linked servers.

  • image from book Design a strategy to manage replication.

    • Design alerts.

    • Design a maintenance plan to monitor health, latency, and failures.

    • Verify replication.

    • Design a plan to resolve replication conflicts.

    • Design a plan to modify agent profiles.

    • Tune replication configuration.

Many organizations have their data stored in more than one location and often use several types of data stores. You can use several methods to ensure the data is available to meet users’ needs. Quite often it suffices to keep that data on the original data store and design a management paradigm to enable users to correlate and query the pieces of data they require. This method involves using distributed queries that are created by using a linked server strategy. Another organization might want to create a version of the data that is near the consumer. You implement this strategy using replication. In SQL Server 2005, you have the capability of using both methodologies.

In this chapter, you will learn how to design a linked server strategy for those users who require multiserver solutions. Then, you will learn how to design a variety of replication strategies to meet the needs of users in a multilocation environment.

As you study both strategies, keep in mind how you can use them in your organization. Oftentimes, these strategies are not implemented simply because database administrators do not have the time to research the needs of the users and to implement a design plan. As you discovered in Chapter 7, “Designing a Database Data Management Strategy,” data management takes quite a bit of planning to make certain an implementation fits the requirements of the users and the business processes and workflows. We recommended several steps you should use when designing a new data management strategy. None of these steps should be short-circuited when implementing a multiserver solution. You need to understand the differences in the workflow between a linked server solution and a replication solution. Indeed, it is possible to implement both as part of your overall management strategy. Just keep in mind what we recommend as your number-one priority: know your data.
