Installing SSIS

Installing SSIS is painless. Load the CD/DVD containing the version of SQL Server that you have licensed, and after the first couple of steps that verify you have the sufficient hardware and resources, you’ll get to the page shown in Figure 6.1.

Here you can see that Integration Services is selected along with the SQL Server database services and the workstation components. This set of options would represent a fairly common install and is the one you should use if you’re doing the install to work on the examples in this chapter. In more advanced situations, you might want to devote the server to SSIS rather than sharing it with an instance of SQL Server, and as you can see from the page shown in Figure 6.1, that is possible-you do not have to check SQL Server Database Services option to check the Integration Services option.

The point to remember if you choose to install Integration Services without SQL Server is that it must be licensed just as if SQL Server were running on that server. In other words, you’re not saving money; you’re just freeing up resources that would otherwise be used by the SQL Server service.

Once you’ve selected the options, you can continue with the install, selecting the disk location and service options. When you’re done with the install, you’ll see quite a few SQL Server–related services installed (view them by choosing Programs image from book Admin Tools image from book Services), but the one that pertains to SSIS is SQL Server Integration Services. (You can see the legacy of DTS here because the underlying service name is MsDtsSrvr.exe.) The service will be set to autostart. From the Services applet, you can stop or start the service or change the service account if needed, like you can do for any other service.
