Acknowledgments

I hate writing books. But I am passionate about training-SQL Server training in particular, having trained thousands of people around the globe over the past decade or so. So first I thank all of those students whom I have had the privilege of teaching; their enthusiasm and particularly their endless questions have tested my knowledge (and patience at times I’ll admit) to the fullest.

I had the privilege of being involved in different capacities with Microsoft Learning at Redmond in the development of both the SQL Server 2005 certification and the courseware development. I saw firsthand the dedication and the hours put in by members of the team. So thanks go to Annie, Barbara, Ben, Chris, Colin, David, Ed, Kareena, Karl, Katalin, Ken, Mindy, Priya, Rebecca, and Sangeeta (in alphabetical order). Drinks are on me at the Taphouse Grill in Bellevue when I am over next!

On a more personal note I also thank Paula Verkhivker, Natasha Fiodoroff, Eugene Deef-holts, Tim Haslett, Kevin Dunn, Steve Commins, James Squire, and Chimay Pères Trappistes for the inspiration in writing this book.

To Iris Friedrichs: in all my travels around the world, you have proven to be one of the most beautiful souls I have encountered. I have yet to meet a more generous and empathic person. I hope your schatzemaus is looking after you!

To Marion Siekierski, wherever this book finds you:

  • This Very Body the Buddha

  • This Very Place the Lotus Paradise

Finally, and most important, to Marc, Larissa, Natalie, and Alex. There is no need for words!

Kind regards,

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. There was no question; it was my passion. How fortunate I am to live my passion and be able to share the results with you. I have had the privilege to be on the forefront of many new developments. I live in research, development, and education. That is what this book is all about-moving forward and surviving. When I first became involved in the SQL Server 2005 beta program, I realized that this product was a tremendous step forward in database philosophynew waters to tread.

This book is for you, my friend and reader. May you consume all the information that Victor, Steve, Andy, and I have put into this book to help you pass the test and to help you with all the new features available for SQL Server administration.

A very, very special set of thanks goes to all my family and friends who encouraged me to take on this project. Joanne, Brian, Justin, Molly, and Sara-Washington is lucky to have your sunshine; just move it closer to New Jersey.

Jay, Mary, Eddie, and Wickett-thanks for all your fast answers.

Dave, Millie, and my South Jersey family-I am ready to join the family again. Thanks for your patience; I’ll bring the wine.

Most important, thanks especially to my fellow authors and that special set of people who take my words and make it into something you can touch, feel, and enjoy working with-the editors: Jeff Kellum, Michael Gordon, and Toni Zuccarini Ackley. Another editor I want to thank for telling me to add comments for you and explain more and for really keeping me on the straight and narrow is my technical editor, Cristian Lefter. All these people and the numerous staff at Wiley have worked long hours to bring you such a professional finished product.

And speaking of professional product, thanks to the Microsoft SQL Server team, Reporting Services team, and Microsoft Learning team that I have been working with over the past few years. I have enjoyed sharing with you in Redmond, Boston, and Seattle.

-Marilyn Miller-White

Working on a book always entails rearranging my schedule and trying to fit a great deal of writing into a relatively short time. This is my fourth book, and although the writing comes easier, it would not be possible without tremendous understanding and support from my wife, Tia, and my children, who lose a great deal of attention from their father during the project.

I also must thank the group at Sybex-Jeff, Toni, and Michael-for their encouragement, assistance, and understanding as I tried to complete this project in a timely manner.

Lastly I want to thank you, the readers, for your support in pursuing certification and purchasing this text. I wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of certification and in your career.

-Steve Jones

I’d like to thank my friend and business partner Steve Jones for encouraging me to participate in this project, even though it came at one of the more hectic times in my life-it was good experience! I’d also like to thank Sean Burke and Tina Rourk for encouraging and supporting my interest in SQL Server so many years ago.
