About the authors

Matthew Butlin BEc (Hons ANU), PhD (MIT), AFAIM

Dr Matthew Butlin leads the global leadership practice of The Empower Group, a global human resources consultancy that assists clients to align people and business strategy.

Matthew describes himself as a lapsed MIT-trained mathematical economist who works with chief executives and executive teams to build sustained improvements in productivity by releasing the productive potential of people.

He has two decades experience as a senior executive in public and private sector organisations in national and international roles, including CRA (now Rio Tinto) and several Commonwealth Government agencies. Matthew s work as a senior executive included operational management, strategic advising on organisation effectiveness, innovation, executive governance and leadership. For two years he was an external member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Defence.

Matthew s approach to consultancy work is very practical. His first question is always ˜What is the work to be done? ; followed by ˜What is the right way to get it done? This is reflected in Empower s Managerial Leadership Framework, which builds a business-wide system of leadership that engages the discretionary contribution of all employees .

Matthew is co-author , with Sir Roderick Carnegie, of Managing the Innovating Enterprise: Australian companies competing with the world s best (Business Council of Australia, 1993). He is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.
