5.1 Typical tasks

 < Day Day Up >

In the course of your day-to-day work as an application programmer, you have access to a variety of IBM and third-party program products that let you locate information about the programs that you need to maintain and develop. With WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer (WSAA), you now have:

  • The contents of your entire application portfolio available for exploration.

  • The power of a DB2-based application that issues SQL queries for you via a Web browser.

As we described in Chapter 1, “An overview of WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer” on page 3, you can easily identify the components that will be affected by a change. As part of this process, you can view the detailed component information. By using the graphical functions of the product, you can assure yourself that you have found all of the components, and that your changes will not have any adverse affect on your site’s production batch jobs or transactions.

We continue to use the sample Trader 2 application for the examples in this chapter. In fact, we begin with the impact analysis project, WSAA Redbook project 1, that we created (on behalf of your application development manager) in Chapter 4, “Exploring your inventory” on page 115.

A typical task you are likely to perform is the modification of an existing WORKING-STORAGE field. For this example, the field CUST-NM must be altered so that is encompasses both a first and last name field. For some reason, this field was not originally defined with two parts. New business requirements — the Trader 2 firm is now under the auspices of a “client friendly” brokerage firm — dictate that customer statements must be addressed to the individual by first name. Your first task is to find all of the places that will be affected by this change.

Note

For the sake of this example, we will ignore the conversion programs that would be required to actually modify the existing files into the correct format.
