A good understanding of Boolean algebra and digital design is necessary for anyone who wants to understand the internal operation of a CPU. As an added bonus, programmers who understand digital design can write better programs. Although a detailed knowledge of Boolean algebra and digital circuit design isn't necessary if you simply want to write typical programs, this knowledge will help explain why CPU manufacturers have chosen to implement instructions in certain ways. These questions will undoubtedly arise as we begin to look at the low-level implementation of the CPU.
This chapter is not, by any means, a complete treatment of this subject. If you're interested in learning more about Boolean algebra and digital circuit design, there are dozens and dozens of books on this subject.
