Summary

Teams need to know where they stand. In this chapter a balanced score-card was presented for incorporating metrics to assess the three Ps (product, process, and people). The primary tool provided was a strategic planning process. Teams should engage in strategic planning at least once a season . However, waiting to address problems once a year would be foolish. Data must be gathered on a daily basis to help a team know whether it is getting better or getting worse . Data should be analyzed to determine if preconceived notions of how to operate as a team have their desired impact.

Teams go through slumps. When scores on your PPP scorecard indicate the team is plateauing or even regressing , it is time to engage in systematic problem solving and strategic planning processes. You need to help teams continually assess outcomes and clarify goals, talents, roles, procedures, interpersonal relations, reinforcement, and external relations. As leader, you need to make sure that teams are performing consciously. Unless they are aware of the data and aware of what they need to succeed, they cannot reach and sustain excellence. Are your teams on track? Is it time for you to facilitate a strategic planning process for your teams?
