Additional Information for Company B's Representatives Only (Dr. Club and Dr. Spade)

You work as research biologists for a pharmaceutical firm, Company B. You are trying to develop a cure for a particularly virulent form of Lyme's disease, now known as MGD40. The disease was first discovered after hunting season last year. It seems that Caucasian males who drink more than five alcohol-based drinks a day are particularly prone to catching this disease. The symptoms include extreme fatigue and severe blood and urinary tract infections. To make matters worse , carriers of MGD40 can transmit this disease through their bodily fluids. Thus a secondary outbreak has occurred among the wives and lovers of these men. It is important that the spread of this virus be stopped as soon as possible.

You've developed a synthetic serum that will stop the subsequent transmission of MGD40 from the original carriers to others. The federal government is working quietly to gain approval for the use of your cure. It should become official in the next two weeks. The injectable serum you have developed is made with a chemical taken from the stem of the exotic orchid, of which only five thousand were produced worldwide this year. (Review the setup on p. 281.) Your firm holds the patent on the synthetic serum, and it is expected to be a highly profitable product when it is generally available to the public because it is thought to have other applications, too.

You are aware that Mr. Greenthumb, a commercial florist for the Everglades of Florida, is in possession of four thousand of the orchids in good condition. The chemicals derived from thirty-five hundred orchids would be sufficient to slow and perhaps stop this fast-spreading epidemic .

You have also been made aware that Dr. Heart and Dr. Diamond from Company A are also urgently seeking to purchase these orchids from Mr. Greenthumb. Your firm is highly competitive with Company A. There is a great deal of industrial espionage in the pharmaceutical industry. Over the past several years , their firm and yours have sued each other several times for infringement of patent rights and espionage law violations.

You've been authorized by your firm to approach Mr. Greenthumb to purchase thirty-five hundred orchids. You have been told he will sell them to the highest bidder. Your firm has authorized you to bid as high as $3,500,000 to obtain the orchids. Before approaching Mr. Greenthumb, you have decided to first talk with Dr. Heart and Dr. Diamond to influence them so that they will not prevent you from obtaining the orchids you need.
