Summary

In this chapter you learned that:

  • q A Smart Page is another name for a Web Part page in SharePoint.

  • q More advanced customization requires MS SharePoint Designer.

  • q Only SharePoint Designer 2007 knows how SharePoint works; no other web designer tool has the features required to customize SharePoint 2007.

  • q Ghosted sites are the default way that site definitions work. All the settings and the layout for every page in all SharePoint sites are based on a set of files stored on the SharePoint server's file system.

  • q Unghosted sites are produced when a page is customized by SharePoint Designer; in this case, SharePoint must store the page in the database. The site definition on the file system is no longer used for the page. Instead, everything is stored in the content database.

  • q Use the DisableWebDesignFeatures keyword in the Onet.xml file to prohibit a site page from being edited by SharePoint Designer.

  • q Examples of basic customization with SharePoint Designer are things like adding extra text, extra buttons, and extra links on a team site.

  • q SharePoint Designer allows you to install complete site packages of unlimited size. This is a very handy way of copying a large site to another SharePoint environment.

  • q Using SharePoint Designer's Report feature, you will get a summary of a given SharePoint site, including a list of broken links and pages that are slow to open.

  • q SharePoint Designer allows you to customize an existing theme in great detail. You can also create new themes.

  • q SharePoint Designer's Data Source and Data view are very powerful tools; they allows even WSS to display content stored in other SharePoint sites and in external sources, such as SQL databases, XML files, and Web services.

  • q The formatting features of Data view are much more advanced than the views available for lists and libraries in SharePoint.

  • q Master Pages are used by both MOSS sites and WSS sites.

  • q WSS sites can still use site themes for controlling the fonts and colors of a site.

  • q Publishing Pages are associated with a content type, such as Article Page.

  • q The layout of Publishing Pages is controlled by page layout files.

  • q All layout files, including Master Pages and Page Layout files, are stored in the Master Page and Page Layouts Gallery, hosted by the top site in a site collection.

In the next and last chapter, you will learn more about backup and restore procedures for SharePoint and how you can move content between different SharePoint environments.
