Best PracticesKnowing When to Create Animations with Fireworks

As you have seen, Fireworks can create some basic animations in a snap. Probably the most common use for animation within Fireworks is to develop different states for rollover buttons and the popular pop-up navigation menus. Beyond that, however, you'll need to consider whether Fireworks is really the best tool for developing your animation.

For instance, if you begin to see your animations creep up in file size, or you find yourself wanting to add functionality such as sound, then you're better off moving on to Flash and developing your animation there.

The trick here is to balance the ease of use but limited functionality found within Fireworks with the complex learning curve and enhanced functionality found in Flash. If you are confident that you can develop your animation in Fireworks without creating an overly large file size, then by all means develop it in Fireworks. If, however, you think that the graphic is complex enough that it might create a pretty hefty file, then you'd be better off creating it in Flash.
