Ask any ten Web designers to name two things that can make the difference between a boring site and an interesting one, and you'll probably get ten different answers. But certainly interactivity and multimedia are likely to come up often.

Interactivity refers to the user 's capability to perform some sort of operation with the mouse or keyboard that produces some sort of result from the browser. The most basic interaction is clicking a link to display new content, but Dreamweaver MX 2004 can go far beyond that ”for example, with rollovers, navigation bars, movable layers, and many other effects, all made possible by pre-built JavaScript "behaviors."

Multimedia has come to mean virtually anything involving audio, video, animation, or some combination thereof. Although the results of successful multimedia integration can be brilliant , developing multimedia Web sites in a multi-browser, multi-platform world, with its variety of playback software technologies and "plug-ins" and "applets," can be a major challenge. Bringing audio and video clips into Dreamweaver via Flash is therefore a popular approach.

We won't devote time to writing your own JavaScript code here, nor will we guide you in the nuances of digital video production. We will, however, introduce you to the nuts and bolts of how Dreamweaver implements interactivity and multimedia within its user interface.
