Maintaining the Assets Panel

The Assets panel requires regular maintenance to retain its value. As the site evolves, so do the assets, but the Assets panel lacks the capability to automatically keep up with its listings. Assets themselves might need to be updated. And, finally, sites might need to share assets already listed on another site.

Refreshing and Rebuilding the Site Assets List

The first time you open the Assets panel for a site, it scans for assets to build a site assets list. After the initial list is created, however, assets are not added to the list unless you refresh the Site list. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the site list is showing by clicking the Site button at the top of the Assets panel.

  2. Click the Refresh Site List button at the bottom of the panel. You can also (Command-click) [right-click] the Assets panel and select Refresh Site List from the context menu.

Refreshing the site list updates the Assets panel with any assets that have been added or deleted within Dreamweaver. If you've made changes to the site outside Dreamweaver, however, these assets are not updated even when you use the Refresh Site List feature. Instead, the list must be re-created. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key when clicking the Refresh Site List button or select Recreate Site List from the context menu.

NOTE

Proper updating within Dreamweaver suggests that, ideally , you will perform all maintenance on your site within the Dreamweaver application.

Editing Assets in Other Programs

To edit an asset, either double-click it in the Assets panel or select it and click the Edit button. Some assets, such as images, must be edited by an external application. The application to use is determined by the settings in the Dreamweaver Preferences tool. If you want to use a different application than the default, select Edit, Preferences and select the File Types/Editors category. Then, add the application you want to use to edit that file type.

Assets that don't reside in physical files but are, instead, scanned from your documents ” such as URLs and colors ”can be edited only in the Favorites list.

HTML-based assets, templates, and library items are edited in Dreamweaver. Double-clicking assets of this type opens a new Document window containing the asset.

Using the Assets Panel Between Sites

Assets are often useful on multiple sites. For an asset to be available to a site, the asset must first be copied to the Favorites list of the new site. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Select the asset or Favorites folder from the Assets panel.

  2. (Command-click) [Right-click] and select Copy to Site from the context menu.

  3. Select a site from the list of defined sites.

The assets are copied to the other site into folders corresponding to those on the source site.
