Troubleshooting

How can I copy a symbol from one movie into another movie?

If you have more than one FLA open, the Libraries for all open documents appear in the Library panel. The title bars in the Library panel display the name of each FLA.

To copy a symbol from one Library to another, you can just copy (Cmd-C on the Mac or Ctrl+C on the PC) and Paste (Cmd-V on the Mac or Ctrl+V on the PC) from one library to another. Alternatively, you can undock one of the libraries, and simply drag and drop the symbol from one library to another. You can also drag a symbol onto the Stage in another FLA, which automatically adds the symbol to the other FLA's Library as well.

If you want to use multiple symbols from another movie, you can also open an FLA as a library, which opens just the Library of a selected FLA and not the Timeline or Stage. Choose File, Import, Open External Library and select an FLA.

Why do I receive the prompt Resolve Library Conflict?

Flash is protecting you from unwittingly overwriting an existing symbol in the Library. If you attempt to drag or copy a symbol to a Library, and the new symbol has the same name as an existing symbol, you are prompted to either replace or not replace the existing symbol. If you choose not to replace, the drag or copy operation is canceled . You can then go into the other Library, rename the symbol, and try again.

I've created a motion guide layer and motion path to animate along. Why isn't it working?

Animation moves along motion guides only if shapes are snapped to the beginning and end of the guide path. Check your beginning and ending keyframes and ensure that your shapes are squarely snapped to the path.

I'm unable to add a shape tween. Why isn't it working?

Check whether the objects you're attempting to tween are symbols. Although objects need to be symbols or grouped for motion tweens, you cannot perform a shape tween on groups or symbols. You can work around this problem by breaking apart a symbol instance. Simply select the instance on the Stage and press Cmd-B (Mac) or Ctrl+B (Windows) to convert a symbol to an object. If a symbol contains nested symbols, you may need to break it apart more than once. This affects just the symbol instance; the symbol itself remains intact in the Library.
