Quick Take-off with Templates

When you create a new document (File, New), you can click on the new Templates tab to choose a template for the file. Templates provide basic design and architecture for a project, saving you set up time.

Some templates are very simple. For example, you can use a Banner Ad template to automatically configure the size of the Stage to 468x60 pixels. Setting the size of the Stage in this way is much faster than using Modify, Document, and typing in the numbers manually. There are ten templates for configuring standard sizes defined by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (www.iab.net).

Other templates are more complex, saving you even more time. For example, the Photo Slideshow template sets up a whole slide show, complete with images, captions, title, and frame, and as well as a controller component for slide-to-slide navigation. You can substitute your images for the ones that are there, type in new captions, and configure a delay time for the auto-play feature that displays all the images round- robin fashion.

There are templates for quizzes, and for mobile devices, such as Compaq's iPaq Pocket PC computer, various smart phones, and the Nokia CLIE PDA. When you install Flash Remoting, it also installs a template, which includes the ActionScript necessary to get a basic Remoting connection up and running.

Several types of templates are usable only in Flash MX 2004 Professional. These include templates for query-response applications (Form Applications), a special version of slide presentations (Slide Presentations), and a screen for choosing high, medium, or low bandwidth for a video stream (Video). The Pro-only templates appear on the Templates list in the standard version of Flash, too, but descriptive text says that you can use them only with Professional, and you get an error message if you try to use them with the standard version.
