Preparing Your System for Installation with an ORiNOCO Gold (Hermes Chipset) Card

  • The PCMCIA services do not need to be upgraded within the Fedora operating system in order to load the new ORiNOCO drivers.

  • The ORiNOCO and Hermes drivers need to be patched to enable monitor mode so that Kismet will work.

  • The ORiNOCO patches are available from the Shmoo Web site at http://airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html.

  • If everything was patched correctly, the iwpriv <interface> command will display that the monitor option is available.

Preparing Your System for Installation with a Prism 2 Chipset Card

  • The Linux wlan-ng drivers are designed to allow Prism 2–based cards to enter monitor mode. These drivers are available from www.linux-wlan.com/linux-wlan/.

  • A flaw in Fedora causes the installation of the wlan-ng drivers to effectively break the PCMCIA service. Therefore, you’ll need to edit the /etc/init.d/pcmcia file.

  • Once the Linux wlan-ng drivers are installed, your Prism 2–based card will work with Kismet.

Installing Kismet

  • The current, stable version of Kismet is 4.0.1.

  • Kismet can be downloaded from www.kismetwireless.net/download.shtml.

  • The installation of Kismet is a very straightforward process involving only three steps:

  • ./configure

  • make dep

  • make install

  • After Kismet is installed, the configuration files must be edited to include your system’s configuration information before Kismet can be used.
