I thought it important to start with the heart of Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 Team System, which is its back-end infrastructure. Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server isn't required to run the various Visual Studio 2005 Team System role-based editions, but without it your team won't collaborate as well as it could. You might say that Team Foundation Server is to Visual Studio Team System what Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is to Microsoft Office Outlook®. You can run Outlook by itself, but without Exchange Server, you'll be missing many features.
