What s In It for You

What's In It for You

As the title says, this book is about "building dynamic web sites with Macromedia Studio MX 2004." It is neither the definitive book about building dynamic sites, nor does it provide you with the skills to master the tools in the Studio. If that is what you are looking for, we would like to thank you for spending this brief time with us and to tell you those books are elsewhere on the shelf.

This book is designed to get you into "The Game." For the next 500 or so pages, we are going to build a dynamic web site for a fictional organization"The Oakbridge Community Center." We will start where all dynamic projects starton a sheet of paperand end where all dynamic sites endwith upload to the server and maintenance. Along the way, we will be using some pretty amazing Macromedia technologies: Flash, Dreamweaver, Freehand, Fireworks, ColdFusion, Director and the Flash Communication Server.

Taken at face value, that list can be regarded as a rather intimidating lineup of products. They are, but we have a different perspective when we use them. To us, they are nothing more than the tools we use to build Dynamic Web Sites. To us, Flash is a hammer . Director is screwdriver. Flash Communication Server is a wrench. So what, you may ask, are the raw materials? Simple. The raw materials are your creativity and some paper.

In the pages that follow, you will see how seven of Macromedia's products in Studio MX 2004 offer you a comprehensive production solution when it comes to building dynamic web sites.

Our intention is not to overwhelm you with technology. This book also is not designed to talk down to you or present concepts that will go right over your head. We don't assume you are a dummy , and we don't assume you have, as Cliff Klaven so eloquently put it in Cheers , a degree in "rocket scientry." We know where you are and how you feel about this new way of doing things because, quite frankly, a couple of us were in your shoes a couple of years ago and had to be dragged, kicking and screaming into the "dynamic way of doing things."

As we did with our first book, Building Web Sites with Macromedia Studio MX , we are going to open a conversation with you around the building of dynamic sites and show you how the skills you have already developed with these applications are the same skills used to build dynamic sites. Along the way, we will share many of the tips, tricks, and techniques we have developed as we move through the creation process.
