CONFIGURING, CUSTOMIZING, AND TROUBLESHOOTING OFFICE APPLICATIONS

  1. You will encounter two different types of Office installations: a fresh installation and an upgrade. A fresh installation is performed on a system that has not had a version of Microsoft Office installed previously. An upgrade installation is performed on a system that has had a previous version of Microsoft Office installed.

  2. Troubleshooting an Office XP installation may require you to rerun the Office Setup in maintenance mode. You can add or remove specific features to reinstall Office XP or to remove Office XP from your computer.

  3. Microsoft has a fail-safe feature that re-creates the blank template if it cannot find this template while creating a new file. To remove all customizations to the blank template, including custom toolbars and menus , simply delete the old blank template and allow the program to re-create the blank template when the program is opened.

  4. You can configure Office XP menus and toolbars using the Customize dialog box accessed through the Tools menu. The Customize dialog box is standard for all Office Suite applications. You can reset, add, or remove toolbar buttons or menu options using this dialog box.

  5. Microsoft Office Proofing Tools is an add-in that supplies a collection of tools, such as spelling and grammar checkers, thesauri , and AutoCorrect lists, for more than 45 languages. Microsoft Office comes with built-in proofing tools for commonly used languages.

  6. Office Suite applications can be personalized to users' preferences. For example, you can customize the My Places bar of the Open dialog box to specific network drives, local drives , or folders.

  7. The Save My Settings Wizard creates a file of your customized settings, including menu, toolbar, and template modifications. The file should be stored on the company network for future use.
