Using Advanced Audio Management

The Advanced Audio Management options are designed to give you a slide-by-slide overview of the audio attached to each slide and any audio that may be assigned as background audio. You can use this area to play or remove any audio files in the movie, as well as to export the files and manipulate them in audio editing software.

To open the Advanced Audio Management dialog box

1.

Open a Captivate movie.

2.

In either the Storyboard View or Edit View panel, select Audio > Advanced Audio.

The Advanced Audio Management dialog box opens (Figure 6.18, next page).

  • Length Displays the duration (in seconds) of each slide's audio track.

  • Fade In/Out Displays the duration (in seconds) of any fades added to the sound.

  • Size Displays the size of the file (in kilobytes).

  • Original Filename Displays the name of the file, if any. Files you record in Captivate will be not be named.

  • Sample Rate The frequency of the file, measured in kHz.

  • Bit Rate Shows the number of samples per wave, measured in kilobits per second. The default in Captivate is 16-bit.

  • Preview Select a sound and click the Play button to preview the audio file.

  • Show object level audio Select to see any audio files that are attached to objects such as captions.

4.

Click Yes or No.

Tip

  • Be very careful with deleting files in the Advanced Audio Management dialog box. The action cannot be undone. If you make this mistake, you will have to re-import the file into the slide.

Exporting an audio file

If you have an audio editing application, you can export any audio file out of Captivate and edit the file in the audio application.

To export an audio file

1.

In the Advanced Audio Management dialog box, select the slide containing the file to be exported.

2.

Click the Export button or press the F10 key.

The Browse For Folder dialog box opens (Figure 6.20).

3.

Navigate to the folder where the exported sound will be placed and click OK.

The dialog box closes, and you are returned to the Advanced Audio Management dialog box.

4.

Finish what you are doing and close the dialog box.

5.

Minimize Captivate by clicking the Window Minimize button and navigate to the folder where the sound was exported.

There are two files in the folder: an MP3 version of the file and the WAV version (Figure 6.21).

Figure 6.21. Exporting audio results in both an MP3 and a WAV version of the exported file.

6.

Open your audio editor, import the WAV file into the editor, and make any changes.

7.

Save the file as a WAV file and quit your audio editor.

Now you can re-import the edited file back into Captivate.

Tip

  • In your audio editor, use the WAV file, not the MP3 version (which is lossy). You should consider exporting the edited file out of the audio editor as a WAV file, as well.
