Chapter 8. IP Route Processing

This chapter presents background and configuration information for processing routes to IP networks. The following topics are covered:

  • 8-1: Manually Configuring Routes ” IP routes can be placed in the routing table as static or default routes. Routes can also be manually cleared. These features are used when routes are not learned through one or more dynamic routing protocols.

  • 8-2: Policy Routing ” IP packets are routed or forwarded out interfaces based on flexible rules that are defined, rather than on the contents of the routing table. This can be used when routing must be performed based on criteria other than the destination network and a routing metric.

  • 8-3: Redistributing Routing Information ” IP routes can be passed from one routing protocol to another. When more than one routing protocol is configured on a router, routes can be selectively or conditionally redistributed between them.

  • 8-4: Filtering Routing Information ” Measures can be taken to prevent outbound routing updates and to selectively suppress routes from being advertised or processed when advertisements are received. You can also configure the router to trust one routing protocol over another by adjusting the administrative distance values.
