Section 12-4. Power Management

12-4. Power Management

  • Power management is available on the Catalyst 6000 switch family only.

  • Power supplies can be put into a redundancy mode such that multiple supplies share the total power load. If one supply fails, another supply carries the entire system load.

  • Power supplies not in redundancy mode can combine their capacities to power the system. This proves useful when the total load of all switch modules is greater than the capacity of a single power supply. If one power supply fails and the other supply does not have the capacity to carry the entire system load, some switch modules are powered down to reduce the load.

Configuration

1.

(Catalyst 6000 only) Configure power-supply redundancy:

COS

 set power redundancy {enable | disable}

IOS

 (global) power redundancy-mode {combined | redundant}

Power-supply redundancy (enable or redundant) is enabled by default.

2.

(IOS Catalyst 6000 only) Control power-supply operation:

COS

N/A

IOS

 (global) [no] power enable power-supply number

By default power is enabled to all power supplies. Supplies are identified by number (1 or 2). Use the no keyword to disable a power supply.

3.

(Catalyst 6000 only) Control power to switch modules:

COS

 set module power up | down mod

IOS

 (global) [no] power enable module mod

By default all switch modules receive power. To disable power to a module, use the down (COS) or no (IOS) keywords with the module number mod (1 to the maximum number of slots in the chassis).
