I've heard Linux users talk about KDE andGNOME. Is the Fedora Core Desktop related to either of these?
A1:
The Fedora Core 4 desktop is a GNOME desktop, and is thus similar in appearance and functionality to the Linux systems that offer a GNOME desktop.
Furthermore, some users prefer some of the behavioral quirks of the KDE environment (such as the busy mouse cursor while launching applications) over the GNOME environment.
Q2:
Can I use KDE with Fedora Core 4 if I prefer KDE overGNOME?
A2:
Yes. In fact, your Fedora Core 4 CDs also contain the KDE environment; they are simply not installed by default. For instructions on installing KDE, refer to Chapter 31, "Installing Linux Software."
Q3:
When I launch applications, they appear in different places or at different sizes from those shown in the figures pictured here. Why?
A3:
Most likely, your desktop is set to display at a different screen size or resolution (number of horizontal and vertical pixels) than the desktop that was used to make the illustrations for this book. Application windows in the figures may appear either larger or smaller than those on your own desktop; new application windows may also appear in different positions.
