Q&A

Q1:

Can I somehow add page numbers to text files that I create in emacs or vi without having to use a full-fledged document formatting system, such as LaTeX?

A1:

Yes. You can use the pr command to accomplish very simple formatting tasks on basic text files and then pipe the output to lpr for printing. To find out more about pr, including the options and arguments it accepts, check out the man page for pr.

Q2:

When I try to run LaTeX, I get an error message and a prompt that looks like a question mark, from which I can't seem to exit. What's wrong?

A2:

This message typically means you have miskeyed a LaTeX command somewhere, and LaTeX has been stumped by it. Look closely at the error message; it usually displays the offending malformed command. Enter exit at the question mark prompt, and your file will be loaded into a vi editor for you, where you can fix the problem.

Q3:

Is LaTeX a Linux- or Unix-only tool? Is it available for Windows or for Mac OS?

A3:

Both Windows and Mac OS users can avail themselves of the features of the LaTeX typesetting engine. There are many versions of LaTeX for the PC, but the easiest to install and use is PCTeX, which can be found at http://www.pctex.com. Information on using LaTeX with Mac OS can be found at http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/.
