Q&A

Q1:

Are there any advantages to using vi or emacs in the desktop environment, rather than the editor accessible through the GNOME Menu?

A1:

Yes, there are, but there is a learning curve. Both vi and emacs have powerful features that are well suited to writing structured documents such as HTML (Web) pages or programs in various computer languages. Topics like this are beyond the scope of this book, however; for more information, consult any of the numerous books detailing the vi and emacs editors.

Q2:

What is the maximum number of jobs that I can suspend or run in the background?

A2:

Although there are theoretical numerical limits on the number of processes that can run simultaneously on a Linux system, these limits are so large that in practice you will never run into them, even when starting many thousands of processes simultaneously. Feel free to start as many shell jobs or applications as your system resources permit.
