Chapter19.Performing Basic Shell Tasks

Chapter 19. Performing Basic Shell Tasks

What You'll Learn in This Chapter:

  • How to manage files in groups

  • How to save the output of commands to a file

  • How to locate specific files with quick searches

  • How to use one command's output as arguments to another command

  • How to start and switch between a lot of programs running simultaneously in a shell

In this chapter, you gain experience with concepts that will be more useful to you the longer you use Linux. You begin the chapter by learning ways to make your life at the command line easier.

As was the case in Chapters 6, 7, and 18, this chapter helps you become familiar with the shell and shell commands and techniques instead of making you an instant pro. Try to follow along and understand what is happening, even if you don't think you can remember all of it later.

To begin this chapter, you should already be logged in to your account at a virtual console or have a Terminal window open on your desktop so that you are ready to give commands at the shell prompt.
