Recording and Playing Back Sound

From time to time, you may have the need to record sound from a microphone and save it to a digital file in Fedora Core 4 that you'll be able to play back later. Naturally, to start, you need to have a microphone plugged into the microphone jack of your computer. When you have a microphone handy and plugged in, recording sound is easy.

To start the sound recorder application in Fedora Core 4, choose GNOME Menu, Sound & Video, Sound Recorder. The Sound Recorder application starts, as shown in Figure 15.14.

Figure 15.14. The Sound Recorder application records sound from a microphone to a digital file that can be replayed later.

To record and save a sound, simply follow these steps:

1.

Select your desired quality level using the Record As drop-down list. The CD quality options produce much better sound quality, but also use more space on disk for your recordings. The Voice option produces less clear sound, but uses much less space.

2.

Click the Record button to begin recording. You see a timer near the bottom of the application window begin to count; it shows the recording time.

3.

When you're done recording, click the Stop button.

4.

Click the Save As button to display a file dialog box that allows you to save the sound to a digital wave (.WAV) file.

After you make a recording, playing it back is easy and can be done in two ways:

  • If you have just made the recording and are still in the Sound Recorder application, simply click the Play button to play back your recording.

  • If you want to play back a recording that you made some time ago, open a file manager and browse to the location of the recording. Double-click the digital file to which you saved your recording, and the recording is played back.
