Universe Deployment Choices

 < Day Day Up >

Many companies have only one Business Objects repository and one universe domain. After all, the universe definitions are fairly small. Most universe interaction is not through the domain. It is either through a copy of the universe on the Windows full client PC or through the WebI midtier.

Having multiple universe domains may be helpful if you would like to have a test environment and a production environment or if you have geographically disbursed users that require different repository availability time. It is rarely useful to have multiple universe domains for network performance reasons. Geographic network bottlenecks will affect query execution more than universe uploads/downloads. In this case, both the data mart and the BusinessObjects repository will need to be located close to the user, as shown in Figure 5-7.

Figure 5-7: A company may have one person that modifies the universes globally but the BusinessObjects repositories are located in different regions.

When a company has multiple universe domains, designers must pay particular attention to which domain they are exporting. This is not very obvious; it appears only on one drop-down box at the import/export stage (see Chapter 14).

Note

Companies may have multiple document domains, as documents can become quite large and resource intensive. Historically, companies may have had multiple security domains to decentralize security by region. However, with the introduction of Supervisor in version 4, this was no longer necessary, as security could be maintained by different security administrators in different regions or functional areas, yet still against one central domain.
