Understanding and Deploying LDAP Directory Services > 4. Directory Road Map |
Chapter 4. Directory Road MapIt's important to spend time designing your directory service. The more time you spend up front getting your design right, the less likely you are to run into trouble later. Naturally, there is a middle ground between spending forever trying to design a perfect service and diving into deployment of a service that is not thought out very well. You should strive to find this middle ground. Keep in mind that no design, regardless of how thorough it may be, can anticipate all the problems that can occur in a real deployment. This is why piloting is such an important phase of your directory deployment. Remember also that design mistakes can be costly, and often the later the mistake is recognized, the more costly it is to correct. This too argues for early piloting and prototyping. This chapter introduces three phases in the directory life cycle, briefly describing the role of each. The chapters in the remainder of Part II, "Designing Your Directory Service," focus on the first phase of the life cycle ”design ”and provide a road map to each aspect of this task. Subsequent parts focus on other aspects of the life cycle.
