Directory Drivers

There were two main factors driving Netscape to deploy an organizationwide LDAP directory:

  • Ensuring the quality of the Netscape Directory Server ”   The primary motivation behind the internal deployment was to provide a testbed for the Netscape Directory Server. The internal deployment provided valuable feedback and helped the software engineers improve the quality of the product before it was made available for beta testing.

  • Supporting directory-enabled applications ”   Netscape has directory-enabled nearly all its products. As these new directory-enabled products neared completion, they were deployed internally. The directory deployment directly supported those applications, which included the Netscape Messaging Server, Netscape Collabra Server, Netscape Enterprise Server, Netscape Certificate Server, Netscape Calendar Server, and Netscape Phone Book application.
