Adjusting Photos

There are some minor image adjustment tools built into the Image Viewer that enable you to adjust the brightness, color , size , and orientation of an image.

Changing Brightness

If your image is too dark or too light, you can change the brightness level using the Image Viewer.

  1. Click on Image . The Image menu will appear.

  2. Click on Filter . A submenu will appear.

  3. Click on Intensity . Several choices will appear.

  4. Click on Brightness . The Image Viewer dialog box will open .

  5. Type a number in the brightness factor field. This number represents the percentage of brightness. Entering a number below 100 will make the image darker . Entering a number less than 100 will make the image lighter.

  6. Click on OK . The brightness level will be applied to the photo.

    Tip  

    To return a photo to its original state, click on the Reset button in the Toolbar.

Adjusting Gamma

Gamma controls how brightly the midtones of a photo appear. In other words, it controls how smoothly an image's colors change from black to white. The gamma levels can be adjusted using the Image Viewer.

  1. Click on Image . The Image menu will appear.

  2. Click on Filter . A submenu will appear.

  3. Click on Intensity . Several choices will appear.

  4. Click on Gamma Correct . The Image Viewer dialog box will open.

  5. Enter any number greater than 1 in the gamma value field.

  6. Click on OK . The gamma level you set will be applied to the image.

Greyscale

The Greyscale feature will take a color photo and convert it into 256 shades of gray.

  1. Click on Image . The Image menu will appear.

  2. Click on Filter . A submenu will appear.

  3. Click on Greyscale . The image will be converted to greyscale.

Rotating an Image

Whether you've taken a landscape or portrait image, you can rotate it so the image appears properly in the Image Viewer.

  1. Click on Image . The Image menu will appear.

  2. Click on Rotate . A submenu will appear.

  3. Click on one of the rotation options . Your image will rotate based on the selection that you chose.

    Tip  

    You can flip an image horizontally or vertically by pressing H or V on your keyboard.

Sending Photos to the Desktop

One of the neat little features of the Image Viewer is that you can change the background of your desktop to any image that you are viewing.

  1. Click on Image . The Image menu will appear.

  2. Click on To Desktop . Several options will appear.

  3. Click on the desired option . There are three different options from which to select.

    • Desktop Tile. This option will tile your image on the desktop.

    • Desktop Max. This option will increase the size of the picture to fit the desktop, but it can change the aspect ratio, which can distort the look of your picture.

    • Desktop Maxpect. This option will increase the size of the picture to fit the desktop, but it will not change the aspect ratio.

  4. Click on the Close button . The Image Viewer will close and you can view the image as the background of your desktop.
