Configuring the Mouse

The mouse is an essential part of our computer experience, as it is one of the main ways we communicate with our computer. Here is a little bit of trivia that you can share at the dinner table tonight. The inventor of the mouse was Douglas Engelbart who first patented a mouse-like device in 1970. The mouse has come quite a way since its origins as a wooden shell with two metal wheels. In Lindows you can control a variety of aspects of the mouse. All of the controls for the mouse are found in one convenient location.

  1. Click on the Launch button . The Launch menu will appear.

  2. Click on Settings . A menu will appear.

  3. Click on Peripherals . Another menu will appear.

  4. Click on Mouse . The Mouse dialog box will open , allowing you to change the settings for your mouse.

Changing the Mouse Hand

By default the mouse is set up for a right-handed person. The left mouse button is the primary button to click, while the right mouse button is secondary. If you are left handed, you can reverse the roles of these buttons .

  1. Click on the radio button beside Left handed. The circle will appear filled in.

  2. Click on Apply . The roles of the mouse button will be reversed .

Changing Response of the Mouse

You can control many aspects of how the mouse moves across the screen.

  1. Click the Advanced tab . A list of many different mouse control options will appear.

  2. Click and drag across a bar to adjust the desired setting.

    • Pointer Acceleration . This will change how fast your mouse moves across the screen in relation to how fast your hand is moving the mouse.

    • Pointer Threshold . This is the smallest distance that the mouse has to move in order to start accelerating.

    • Double Click Interval . This feature allows you to set the maximum time in between two clicks for the computer to recognize that it is a double-click.

    • Drag Start Time . When dragging and dropping, this is the amount of time you have after clicking an object to begin dragging it.

    • Drag Start Distance . When dragging and dropping, this is the minimum distance you have to drag the file for it to move.

    • Mouse Wheel Scrolls By . If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can set the number of lines it will advance up or down when you use the scroll wheel.

    • Defaults . This button enables you to restore all of the factory defaults.

  3. Click on Apply , and the settings will take effect.
