Managing Users

Lindows is a multiuser operating system, meaning that you can have different people log on and access the same computer. Each user has a place to store their own files and can customize the computer to fit their tastes. For example, let's say you and your friend both have access to this computer. When you log on, you change the look of the desktop, add multiple desktops, and change your screen saver. When your friend logs on, all of his settings will still remain intact. Each user can customize the look of the computer any way they see fit, without affecting other users. The management of users on your machine can be done through the User Manager.

  1. Click on the Launch button . The Launch menu will appear.

  2. Click on Settings . A list of different setting options will appear.

  3. Click on User Manager . The User Manager will be launched.

Adding Users

When Lindows is first set up, one user, the root user, is set up. The root user is a "super user" who has access to all the computer's functionality. New users with their own passwords can be created and limitations on their access can be set.

  1. Click on the Add button . A dialog box will open , allowing you to add a user.

  2. Type a name for the user. This is the name that the user will enter when logging in to Lindows. No two users can have the exact same name.

  3. Click on OK . The User Properties dialog box will open where you can set the password and permissions for this user.

  4. Click on the Set Password button . The Enter Password dialog box will open.

  5. Type in a password for this user. It will appear as a series of asterisks , so anyone watching the screen won't see it.

  6. Press the Tab key . Your cursor will advance to the next field.

  7. Retype the password . This is to confirm that you typed it properly initially.

  8. Click on OK . The password will be set.

  9. Click on the Password Management tab . Here you can set parameters such as when the password will expire and what will happen if it does.

  10. Make the desired changes . You can change any of the settings.

  11. Click on OK . The user will be created. However, the changes won't take effect until you save them.

  12. Click on the Save button . The changes that you made will take effect.

    Tip

For each new user a separate folder is created in the home directory that contains their personal preferences and files. Three new directories, Desktop, My Documents, and Network are also created for each user.

Deleting a User

You can remove a user from the computer if they no longer require an account. You must be logged in as the root user in order to delete a user.

  1. Click on the user that you would like to delete. It will be highlighted.

  2. Click on the Delete button . A dialog box will open, asking if you are sure you want to delete the user.

  3. Click on the Delete button . The user will be removed. If you have inadvertently deleted a user don't worry, the user won't be deleted until you save the changes.

  4. Click on the Save button . The changes that you made will take effect.

Modifying a User

You can change the password for users or their permission levels through the User Manager.

  1. Click on the user that you'd like to edit. The name will be highlighted.

  2. Click on the Edit button . The User Properties dialog box will open.

  3. Make the desired changes . You can change the password, its expiration, or other user information.
