The Patterns

Wouldnt it be great to understand these fear-driven patterns? This book offers a big step in gaining that understanding, helping you to understand your own patterns and helping you to get along better with people who exhibit these patterns. Throughout this book we will look closely at how to transcend these ways of acting and free ourselves from the troublesome feelings that accompany them.

No, I am not trying to pull you into a literary psychotherapy session. I am not a therapist, though I have had my fair share of therapy and have studied the therapeutic process. My training is mostly in philosophy. Philosophers think about ideas. They use reason to sort things out. More specifically , I am an executive coach. I spend a good deal of my time talking to people one-on-one about their business challenges, usually as they relate to feeling good about themselves on the job or interacting effectively with other people.

Ive been coaching for twenty years. Through those years , I have been engaged to apply philosophical thinking to help people sort out people- related problems on the job. I have seen patterns in how clients behave under certain circumstances. Along the way I have researched the work of various thinkers in order to understand what I was seeing. I have assimilated, massaged, and applied a simple model to explain how people tend to operate . As youll see, this model, which I call the Transcendence Model, is very useful and effective.
