SUMMARY

In this chapter we've looked at the ways that ASP.NET 2.0 provides improved support over version 1.x for mobile and small-screen devices such as cellular phones and PDAs. You can see that building pages to suit these types of devices is much easier and more intuitive than in earlier versions of ASP.NET and, in fact, in any other Web programming environment.

We saw how the Framework now automatically detects the client device type and through adaptive rendering changes the output to suit that client. You no longer have to decide what types of clients you want to support or write special code to suit each type of device.

We looked at the three controls and attributes that are generally specific to mobile devices, including the Pager control, which makes it easy to break a page into separate screens; the PhoneLink control, which can initiate a voice connection; and the SoftKeyLabel attribute, which can improve the user experience.

In the next chapter, we'll change tack completely to look at another important aspect of ASP.NET 2.0, namely, how the caching features have been vastly improved in this new version.
