The i5/OS operating system supports 10-character names for everything, whereas the S/36 poses certain restrictions. Some of the most notable differences are:
User names can be no more than eight characters long on the S/36.
Workstation names (display stations, printers, and diskette drives) must be two characters long on the S/36.
Files, libraries, and library members can have names of up to eight characters on the S/36.
