Chapter 7: XDoclet Primer

Overview

How many times have you sat down at your computer ready to begin working on your next EJB, Struts, or SOAP project only to realize you have a mountain of benign coding ahead of you. Constructs such as home interfaces, configuration files, XML, and others begin to flood your mind, and you wonder why you have to write all of this support code just to set the foundation for your new application. Why can't some code generator just write all of this "basic" code for you?

Your mind travels back to the days when Byte magazine arrived in the mailbox at over one-inch thick. Embedded in the pages was an article or advertisement about a new code generation application that was going to end coding as we knew it. Depending on your point of view, that situation never quite developed because the code generation applications were just too rigid. Looking at the clock you see that 20 minutes have passed and you aren't any closer to getting your project started.

Today, we do have an option available that helps with the development of much of the support code needed in current technologies. XDoclet is the answer, and this code generation tool will bring a new edge to your software development practices and save you both time and money in the process. In this chapter, we are tasked with understanding what XDoclet is, its capabilities, the things it cannot do, and how to use it.
