Chapter 10: Sametime Links Scalability Report

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

Executive summary: Sametime Links is a Sametime client that can be deployed easily on new or existing Web applications. Sametime Links is ideally suited for intranet or extranet Web applications and portals, as well as high-volume Internet Web sites that want to add the power of instant messaging and awareness to their application without changing the existing layout. Sametime Links can easily support, on a single server, several thousand concurrent Sametime Links users, in addition to tens of thousands of regular Sametime clients, such as Sametime Connect. To support a very large number of Sametime Links clients, additional hardware is required.

IBM's High-Volume Web Sites group teamed with developers of Sametime to understand how Sametime Links could be scaled to support a very large number of users. This chapter describes the tests and their results.

The tests show that a relatively small complex can support a very large customer base. A clustered architecture with up to 15 servers scaled linearly as the number of servers was increased. Overall, the tests showed that Sametime could support 300,000 concurrent Sametime Links clients in the test environment. It is anticipated that even more clients could be supported with additional servers.
