Chapter 8: Building a Custom Web Content Management Solution with IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms, Version 8

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

Executive summary: Today enterprises need to respond in real time to what is happening in the marketplace. They rely increasingly on their Web site to gain competitive advantage. To attract and retain customers, enterprises' Web pages have become more complex, sophisticated, and rich in content. Enterprises need to manage, integrate, and deliver Web content in a way that is cost-effective, scalable, and leverages their existing infrastructure.

There are many content management products available. However, many enterprises have yet to find an off-the-shelf product that can meet their specific requirements in areas such as site management and access control and that can be easily implemented and integrated into their existing infrastructure. Under such circumstances, some enterprises decide to build their own customized content management system to deliver information on demand.

IBM DB2 Content Manager for Multiplatforms provides a flexible programming framework for building a sophisticated content management solution based on the specific requirements of the enterprise. Using this framework can greatly reduce the time and effort expended to develop a web content management solution.

Using IBM Content Manager Version 8, the High Volume Web Site (HVWS) Team built a content management solution with one of our major customers. This chapter reviews our experience and lessons learned while implementing a customized Web content management solution.

See Chapter 7 for additional experiential information about this solution
