Virtualization can help make the most of IT resources, increase the level of service provided to critical business applications, and increase responsiveness to the need for new applications. WebSphere Application Server, Version 5 has the technologies needed to help build a virtualized application server environment. In addition to the architecture considerations discussed in this chapter, other factors that are critical to the success of virtualization include prioritizing applications, monitoring systems, standardizing technologies, and establishing and maintaining an operations environment supported by strong processes and procedures.

Implementing WebSphere Application Server, Version 5.0 virtualization technologies is an important first step in creating a virtualized environment. IBM is delivering new offerings and road maps that enable enterprises to create their e-business on demand operating environment. The IBM Server Allocation for WebSphere technology (see Chapter 1) will make it even easier to virtualize a WebSphere server environment by providing advanced automation and load balancing functions among WebSphere applications and compute intensive workloads. Additional information about this technology and other IBM e-business on demand offerings can be found at www.ibm.com/e-business.

IBM will continue to deliver new offerings and road maps to enable its customers to convert to an e-business on demand operating environment and achieve what's possible with grid and autonomic computing. IBM is ready to help you transform to an e-business on demand environment regardless of where you are today.
