Adding Repositories to Synaptic’s Lookup List

If you fnd that you are frequently using a Freshrpms compatible repository, particulary DAG, to directly download files, you might find it useful to access that repository via APT/Synaptic. If you are using a dial-up modem, I wouldn’t recommend this because it will slow things down a tad when you update package lists, but otherwise, it can be rather handy.

Adding repositories to Synaptic is now quite easy. After running Synaptic, go to the Preferences menu and select Repositories, which will bring up the Repositories window. To add a new repository, such as DAG, click the New button and then enter the repository information in the three text boxes at the bottom of the Repositories window (Figure 10-7). This information can be found on the homepage of the repository you wish to add. In the case of DAG, this information is located at http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/.

The repository information is broken into three parts: the URL, the distribution, and the section. On the repository homepage this is usually written in one line with the different parts separated by spaces. For example, in the case of Fedora Core 1, the repository details are given as http://apt.sw.be redhat/fc1/ en/i386 dag, and the placement of these three elements in the Synaptic Repository window can be seen in Figure 10-7.
