Chapter 11: Preparing for Enterprise Computing

Download CD Content

Overview

As you encounter more sophisticated application scenarios, you are going to run into some more complicated and interesting problems. WebSphere offers a set of extended functions to help you prepare your application for large-scale integration and sophisticated application requirements. These include services for:

  • Handling international user sets

  • Pass-through parameters

  • Application initialization

  • Asynchronous execution

We will describe these services in more detail, as we proceed with the chapter.

These extensions are not part of the J2EE standard – although, IBM has submitted them to the JCP (Java Community Process) for standardization in the future. While using the benefits of these functions, it should be kept in mind that they are non-portable to other vendor's application servers.

About the Examples in this Chapter

The examples introduced in this chapter have not been incorporated into the Plants-By-WebSphere example application. The snippets defined here are taken from the Chapter11Sample application provided on the CD accompanying this book. Nonetheless, we will attempt to describe their utility within the context of the Plants-By-WebSphere scenario.

All of the services described in this chapter will only work with WebSphere Application Server Enterprise (WASE) edition and by extension, should be developed with WebSphere Studio Application Developer-Integration Edition (WSAD-IE). You can import this example into WSAD-IE. You will have to define Java build path variables for the acwa.jar, i18nctx.jar, startupbean.jar, and asynchbeans.jar from the WAS_EE_V5 classpath variables:
