Chapter 6. Using Spell Check and Dictionaries

By default, FileMaker automatically checks spellings against two dictionaries: a main dictionary based on your computer's language setting and a user-defined dictionary that's created automatically and named User.upr. Since the main dictionary contains 100,000 words and your default user dictionary can hold up to 32,000 words, this combo works fine in almost all situations.

Sometimes, however, you may want to create a special user dictionary for occasional use. Examples might include a dictionary of trademarks or medical terms. This requires two separate actions: first you create the new user-defined dictionary and then you select it. Each FileMaker database can be linked to its own user dictionary. This allows you to link a medical database to a user medical dictionary or link a music-oriented database to a user dictionary of performing artists' names. Once that file-to-dictionary link is made, you need not specify it again.

You can use these same steps to switch your main dictionary from one language to another. User dictionaries are built either by adding words one by one or by importing an existing file of special terms created in another application, such as Microsoft Word.
