Temporary Instant Capacity Overview

Temporary Instant Capacity allows a computing environment to flex as the workloads demand. The demands may be a result of a Serviceguard failover, cyclical peaks in workload usage, or a variety of other reasons. Regardless of the reason, Temporary Instant Capacity provides a way to pay for hardware when it is needed, not when it is acquired.

Temporary Instant Capacity is a feature of Instant Capacity. As shown in Figure 11-1, users can activate unlicensed CPUs using the Temporary Instant Capacity software. A Temporary Instant Capacity codeword must be applied to provide Temporary Instant Capacity. When the user activates the CPUs using a special Temporary Instant Capacity option for the icod_modify command, the software debits time from the Temporary Instant Capacity balance. When the user deactivates the CPU, debiting from the Temporary Instant Capacity balance stops. When the Temporary Instant Capacity balance is depleted, HP requires the CPUs to be deactivated. However, to prevent the possible disruption of an application, the Temporary Instant Capacity software does not automatically deactivate unlicensed CPUs. Instead, they must be manually deactivated by the user. Unlicensed CPUs that are active after the Temporary Instant Capacity balance is depleted causes a negative balance to accrue that must be paid for by purchasing and applying further codewords.

When the Temporary Instant Capacity balance is depleted, it does not result in CPUs being automatically deactivated. Instead, the Temporary Instant Capacity balance will begin accruing a negative balance that must be reconciled by purchasing and applying further codewords.

When the Temporary Instant Capacity balance is depleted and the CPUs have been manually deactivated, additional Temporary Instant Capacity codewords can be purchased and applied to re-enable the use of the unlicensed CPUs.
