Getting Fink for Mac OS X

Fink is a great tool for building and installing almost any Unix program you'll need, but what can you do to get it running? You certainly can't use Fink to install itself if it's not installed yet (although, as you'll see later, you can use it to update itself). Luckily, Fink binary packages are available for download.

To get Fink

1.

Visit the Fink download page at http://fink.sourceforge.net/download.

2.

Click the Fink Binary Installer link (version 0.7.1 as of this writing).

This takes you to the list of SourceForge mirrors.

3.

Click one of the icons in the Download column.

The mirror page lists all of the known SourceForge mirrors for this Fink Binary Installer. Try to pick one physically close to you, but don't worry about it too much.

After a few seconds, your download begins.

4.

Save the Fink installer file (Fink-0.7.1-Installer.dmg) to your Desktop.

That's ityou've got Fink!

Who's a What Now?

Unlike many open-source projects, Fink is just a name, not an acronym. It's the German word for finch. The project's originator was thinking about the name for the BSD core of Mac OS X, Darwin, and Charles Darwin, and remembered learning about Darwin finches in school.
