Getting FreeBSD 5.3

As with all free software, you can get FreeBSD by downloading it. But before you start downloading large CD-ROM files, make sure you have a PS/2 port handy for your keyboard. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, you can't install FreeBSD on a system with a USB keyboard.

To get FreeBSD

1.

Visit the FreeBSD Web site ( www.freebsd.org).

2.

Click the "Getting FreeBSD" link under Software.

3.

Click the "FTP Sites" link.

4.

Choose a mirror close to you.

5.

When you open a connection to your chosen mirror, change to the ISO-IMAGES-i386 directory.

6.

Change to the 5.3 directory and download the ISO images (.iso files). You can skip the CHECKSUM.MD5 file if you don't have an md5sum program handy. The md5sum program will verify that you've downloaded the files as they were released (and that they haven't been tampered with).

7.

Use your favorite CD-burning software to copy the ISO images to CDs.

The brave new world of FreeBSD awaits!
