What's in This Book?

This book picks up where the Unix: Visual QuickStart Guide ends, by continuing your journey into the Unix world.

We start with Chapter 1, a quick review of Unix from a user's point of view, with information about using Unix, moving around the file system, mastering some of the more important commands, and working with two common text editors (vi and EMACS).

Next comes Chapter 2, "Configuring Unix," showing you how to determine which services start when the system boots. Chapter 3, "System Administration 101," covers the basics ofyou guessed it!system administration before we move on to Chapter 4, "Safety and Security," which includes backups and virus scanning.

Chapter 5, "Basic Services," runs through Telnet, FTP, and DHCP, along with sharing parts of your file system with NFS and Samba.

The next several chapters look at hosting a variety of services for the other systems on your network (Chapter 6, "Hosting a File Server"), printing with the traditional Unix lpd system and CUPS (Chapter 7, "Hosting a Print Server"), sending and receiving email with Sendmail and Postfix (Chapter 8, "Hosting an Email Server"), serving Web pages with Apache (Chapter 9, "Hosting a Web Server"), managing databases with MySQL (Chapter 10, "Hosting a Database Server"), and doing Web programming with PHP (Chapter 11, "Programming for the Web").

Finally, Chapter 12, "Advanced Services," looks at running your own caching DNS server, working with the firewall systems built into modern Unix systems, and using Squid to cache Web pages.

At the end of the book, you'll find a bunch of appendixes offering additional information and installation tips. The first appendix provides a laundry list of extra resources and a number of handy Web sites where you can learn more about Unix in general. Other appendixes tell you how to install and update Fedora Core 3, FreeBSD 5.3, Cygwin, and Fink. The last one explains how to find out about Webmin, a system-administrator interface you can use from your favorite Web browser.
